A student in the U.S. Olympic Education Center program at Northern
Michigan University, Spenser Mango is making his Olympic debut and
he'll compete in the smallest Greco-Roman weight class, 55kg/121 lbs.
Mango made it the Olympics by knocking off Sam Hazewinkel two matches
to none in the best-of-three final at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials.
The Beijing Games will be Mango's first major international
tournament, as he has yet to compete at a senior world championships.
The 22-year-old won his first national title by defeating former
Worlds bronze medalist Lindsey Durlacher at the 2008 Nationals.
Mango's best previous Nationals finish was runner-up in 2006; he
placed 6th in 2005 and 5th in 2007. Also in 2006, he won bronze at the
2006 Junior World Championships.
